Welcome to our Nursery
During winter in Sydney our
nursery is a very busy place.
We have 'mothers in waiting' arriving from the pound all the time.
Our nursery also sees many
orphaned pups who are nursed around
the clock by trained veterinary nurses.
We are a registered charity
and running a 24 hour facility for
Mums and Bubs is expensive.
Please note that our nursery
is strictly a staff only
area.
We have a viewing area available to the public upon request.

Pippi and her babies
Pippi was not even 12 months
old when she was dumped at a local pound severely emaciated and heavily
pregnant. Pippi also had kennel cough and a severe secondary
respiratory infection.
This little munchkin weighed
half her estimated normal body weight, and with the physical stress of
pregnancy Pippi would have died without urgent veterinary intervention.
Her 6 puppies arrived on the
19th August 2008.
At 2 days of age all the
puppies were critically ill with respiratory infections, and despite
around the clock veterinary and nursing care, sadly |
5 puppies died.
Pippi is doing well and
gaining much needed weigh, and her kennel cough and pneumonia has
responded to medication.
The surviving pup is still on
antibiotics.

6
puppies left to freeze
and die!
While most
people enjoy snuggling in their warm beds at night, dreading
the alarm clock ringing and having to get up and face the
cold winter morning, spare a thought for six tiny puppies
who spent the night in the open, and were found covered in
frost on a morning when western Sydney temperatures
plummeted to zero.
Imagine
weighing less than a packet of biscuits and being dumped by
a heartless human in the dead of a winter night.
We
currently have a litter of tiny puppies fighting for their
lives in our intensive care nursery. Six puppies were
abandoned, two were found frozen and dead, and the remaining
four pups are in a serious condition.
Even with
the best of veterinary and nursing care, these puppies may not survive.
NSWAR is a
24 hour privately funded facility for homeless small breed
dogs and cats, pregnant bitches
and orphaned puppies.
UPDATE: None of
these beautiful puppies survived! |

Above are
some of the abandoned puppies |
Premature Puppies
The premature puppies we see at NSWAR are usually delivered to
mama dogs who have been stressed, emaciated and generally in
a very poor state of health.
Often the mama dog will not
want to care for her own
premmie babies, and the basic care, warmth and nutrition needs
of the puppies are provided by highly trained volunteer staff.
Premmie puppies
are usually very tiny and very thin.
They have little or no fur and cannot maintain their body
temperature at all. Hence they become chilled very quickly.
Some of the premmie pups
cannot suckle at all.
These babies need to be hand fed hourly, 24 hours a day.
We are in urgent need of an
isolet which provides a controlled
environment for these puppies to have a greater chance of survival.
The isolet provides
controlled warmth, humidity and oxygen.
These units cost $2600.00 each.
To provide 24 hour
professional care for each premature puppy
at NSWAR costs $25 per day.
NSWAR does not receive any
government funding to assist in
the care of these special needs animals.
We are a registered charity and can issue tax deductible receipts for
donations $2 and over.
If you would like to help us, we have
many sponsor packages available.

Ladies in Waiting
We receive calls from the
pounds in NSW to help heavily pregnant
small dogs, who are often emaciated and sick.
The toll of pregnancy on the tiny bodies of these poor
creatures is often life threatening.

Orphan Puppies
The majority of our orphan
puppies are received from the general public.
These are the puppies that many families believe will make them a few
dollars. However these 'backyard breeders' do not have the veterinary
expertise
to recognise that the mama dog is having a difficult labour.
The end result is a dead
mama dog, and often many dead puppies
still in the uterus of the mama dog.

Nursery Equipment
Many of our mums need
caesarian deliveries, and often need intravenous
fluids for up to 48 hours after surgery. An infusion pump would
make the
delivery of fluids an easier job for our volunteer veterinary nurses.
We are urgently in need of an
infusion pump in the Nursery.
An infusion pump administers fluids to our patient in controlled
amounts, and can deliver as little as 0.1ml of fluid per hour.
The cost
for one infusion pump is $1400
All donations are 100% tax
deductible
A plaque recognising your donation will be attached to
equipment
purchased.
